Not All Facials Are The Same: SaltFacial vs. HydraFacial

Person getting a facial

These days, facials are all the rage—and for a good reason! They’re a great way to combine relaxation and skin rejuvenation, providing numerous benefits such as minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reducing acne scarring, evening out skin tone, and much (much) more.

But of all the facials on the market, there’s one that reigns supreme: the SaltFacial! But how does this cutting-edge, three-step skin treatment compare to another well-known skin procedure, such as the Hydrafacial? Read on to learn more about the differences between the two, and see why the Saltfacial is right for you.

Saltfacial vs. Hydrafacial

What is a SaltFacial?

The SaltFacial is a one-of-a-kind treatment that’s meant to restore, replenish, and rejuvenate all skin types. It’s the only system that uses natural, powdered, and highly refined sea salt to gently remove dead skin, unclog pores, and breathe life back into your appearance. Because of sea salt’s antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects on the skin, it also aids in the release of toxins and impurities.

It’s designed to leave your skin feeling refreshed, not raw. It’s important to note that this is only available in a medical aesthetic environment (like the AESTHETICS 360º med spa) due to its complexity and advanced clinical results. In fact, we’re proud to be an exclusive provider in the state of Wisconsin to offer this technology.

What are the Benefits of a SaltFacial?

The SaltFacial Skin Renewal Treatment is the most popular skin treatment at AESTHETICS 360º in Milwaukee, and understandably so.

The SaltFacial can help:

  • Reduce fine lines
  • Minimize the appearance of pores
  • Smooth & soften skin texture
  • Fight breakouts & acne
  • Decrease signs of sun damage
  • Lighten scarring
  • Improve uneven skin tone

What is the SaltFacial Process Like?

It feels like suction, but it’s not! SaltFacial technology involves a patented hand-piece to exfoliate the skin, utilizing proprietary organic sea salt.

Step 1: Gentle Exfoliation

To start, your provider will glide the SaltFacial handpiece over your skin. The closed-loop, positive-pressure flow technology will push the refined and powdered sea salt across the skin at a precise angle. This allows for more accurate exfoliation, uniform resurfacing, and dead skin removal.

The Hydrafacial utilizes vacuum suction, which can feel harsh and be too rough for some skin types. Hydrafacial vacuum technology can also leave behind tiny, broken capillaries.

Step 2: Collagen Boost

The next step of the SaltFacial involves the use of a small, hand-held medical ultrasound device to drive powerful antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic, mandelic, or glycolic acid, into the dermal layer of the skin (up to 2X deeper than when topically applied). There, they can nourish and enhance cellular turnover and promote collagen production, hydrating skin from the inside out.

Step 3: LED Light Therapy

The last step of the SaltFacial uses large, wrap-around panels containing high-powered LED (light-emitting diode) lights. With 4 different light wavelength settings to choose from, it can be customized to improve circulation, stimulate collagen, reduce inflammation and redness, or kill surface bacteria on acne-prone skin. (But be warned—most people report falling asleep during this step because they find it so relaxing!)

What to Expect After a SaltFacial

After the SaltFacial treatment, there is no downtime and no activity restrictions. (Depending on your skin, it may appear pink immediately after treatment.) If a more aggressive setting is part of your treatment plan, you may experience light crusting for a few days as pigment lifts and old cells shed.

It’s important to note that the SaltFacial is not a spa treatment that leaves a temporary effect. It’s a medical aesthetic skin renewal therapy that can initiate real results after only a couple of sessions and can be maintained with ongoing treatments.

What is a Hydrafacial?

The Hydrafacial is a treatment that is advertised as a facial that’s meant to “exfoliate, extract, and hydrate” your skin. Often described as a mix of microdermabrasion and deep-pore cleansing, it uses water and suction as a means of exfoliating (as opposed to the SaltFacial, which uses soothing natural sea salt).

It can be done in about 45 minutes. However, unlike the SaltFacial, which can only be administered in a medical aesthetic environment, the Hydrafacial can be administered at any spa or makeup store. (Because of this, you run the risk of receiving treatment from an untrained provider who does not prioritize sanitation or your skin goals.)

What are the Benefits of a Hydrafacial?

Providers claim that the Hydrafacial can help with:

  • Reduce fine lines & wrinkles
  • Decrease hyperpigmentation & redness
  • Smooth & brighten skin
  • Minimize the appearance of enlarged pores

However, it’s important to note that achieving these results will require more treatments (as opposed to a more clinically relevant SaltFacial, which requires fewer treatments). Due to the abrasiveness of the procedure, you also might walk away with irritation, redness, and breakouts, and in some extreme cases, you can even experience damage to the skin barrier if the facial is overdone. That’s why receiving your facial from an experienced and licensed clinical aesthetician is crucial.

What is the Hydrafacial Process Like?

The Hydrafacial involves the use of a specialized machine that’s meant to exfoliate, extract, and infuse.

Step 1: Cleanse & Peel

The first step of a Hydrafacial is a cleaning, followed by an exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and prepare the skin for upcoming treatments. Once exfoliated, an acid peel consisting of glycolic and salicylic acids is applied to help loosen any impurities, such as dirt and debris, from your pores.

Step 2: Extract & Hydrate

Once your skin has been thoroughly exfoliated, the next step involves using patented Vortex-Fusion technology to suction out blackheads and congestion. It’s important to note that this part of the process can feel harsh or rough for some skin types, and is not recommended for those with sensitive skin.

Step 3: Infuse & Protect

The last step of the Hydrafacial involves infusing your skin with serums that are geared towards your skin goals. They tend to consist of a blend of essential nutrients, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acid.

What to Expect After a Hydrafacial

The Hydrafacial is not for everyone. Most people report dryness as their skin adjusts to the exfoliation, as well as redness and sensitivity (which usually fades within a few hours). In extreme cases, the suction can cause dark spots or bruising (especially around delicate areas of the face), as well as tiny broken capillaries.

There is always a chance that you may experience a minor breakout shortly after. This is caused by the impurities deep within the layers of your skin being brought to the surface (also known as skin purging). Because of this, the Hydrafacial is not recommended on the day of a special event, unless your skin is used to having facials.

The Answer is Obvious: SaltFacial is the Way to Go!

If you want more natural, deeper skin correction, then the SaltFacial is the way to go! Because vacuum suction is not used like in Hydrafacials, SaltFacials are safe for all skin types. Gone are the days of tissue micro-injury resulting in broken capillaries and hyperpigmentation caused by suction. With the SaltFacial, patients can see and feel immediate rejuvenation and return to their daily activities right away.

If you’re still unsure, let’s quickly review the two:
