Do you think you know everything there is to know about one of our favorite skin-rejuvenating treatments at AESTHETICS 360°? If so, then it’s time to test your knowledge of microneedling—a non-surgical, minimally invasive method that uses a SkinPen® to create micro-punctures in the skin.
It’s designed to improve a variety of skin conditions by naturally stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. Pretty great, right? (Our hundreds of complexion-happy clients certainly think so!) Keep reading for a quick crash course on what exactly microneedling is, how it works to heal your skin, and what you can expect from the process!
What is Microneedling?

Microneedling (or collagen induction therapy) is a non-surgical treatment for skin rejuvenation Unlike other mechanical exfoliation treatments, such as microdermabrasion, microneedling is designed to address skin concerns at a deeper level and stimulate collagen production.
Microneedling reaches below the top layer of the skin by creating tiny punctures with miniature needles. These tiny punctures allow the skin to react as though it were injured, causing it to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. The newly formed collagen and elastin give strength and firmness to the skin, while also helping to:
- Even out and brighten skin tone
- Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
- Diminish scarring caused by acne and stretch marks
- Reduce the appearance of enlarged pores
How Microneedling Works

At AESTHETICS 360°, we are proud to offer the SkinPen® Microneedling device—the first and only microneedling device in the world that has been studied and cleared by the FDA. (That’s pretty huge!) It’s made from sterile, medical-grade stainless steel needles and features disposable cartridges for single-use.
During treatment, the SkinPen® moves across the skin in a stamping-like process, creating hundreds of microscopic punctures that stimulate collagen production and increase blood flow. It’s safe for all skin types, and can be used not just on the face, but also on the neck, chest, and body!
Is an At-Home Dermaroller the Same as Microneedling?

Nope! A dermaroller is a tool with a rolling drum lined with tiny needles. You’ve probably seen them sold in stores or advertised online as a similarly effective way to improve your skin quality. However, that’s not necessarily true—at best, it might temporarily brighten your skin, but it won’t provide any ongoing noticeable results.
In fact, at-home dermarollers have been known to harbor harmful bacteria that can enter the skin through the tiny channels and cause infections. (Ugh!) If you want real, long-lasting results, then microneedling is the way to go. The SkinPen® enters the skin vertically, instead of at an angle like a dermaroller, which means deeper, more advanced benefits.
What to Expect During Microneedling

After a thorough facial cleansing, a topical numbing cream will be applied to your skin to keep you completely comfortable during the process. The numbing cream will be removed after 20-30 minutes, and then a gliding gel will be applied as the handheld SkinPen® device is moved across your skin in a series of passes.
The penetration level of the micro needles will vary depending on the area of the face and treatment goals. But don’t worry, even though a series of tiny needles might sound painful, thanks to the numbing cream, most patients only report feeling a slight vibration.
Although the whole appointment will take around an hour, the actual procedure only takes about 20 minutes. Your face will be cleansed again at the end of the treatment, and an after-care ointment will be applied.
What to Expect After Microneedling
There is very little downtime after a microneedling session! Afterward, your skin will likely be slightly pink or red, similar to a sunburn, but it should subside within 24 to 48 hours. While the temporary redness may look more intense than the redness after microdermabrasion, it’s because microneedling is a more powerful treatment.
What Should You Not Do After Microneedling?
It’s crucial to leave your skin alone for the rest of the day after your microneedling treatment. If you want to shower and wash your face, wait until the next morning. Waiting a minimum of 24 hours to exercise is an absolute must—all those newly created micro-channels stay open for 18 to 24 hours and can be receptive to bacteria.
You’ll also want to avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks after a microneedling treatment. Failure to protect against sunlight and exposure to UV rays might cause hyperpigmentation. That’s why it’s crucial to apply a UVA/UVB sunblock with a minimum of SPF 30 when outdoors, even if it’s cloudy. We can’t say this enough: Wear sunscreen!
(But don’t worry too much about trying to remember it all! At AESETHETICS 360°, we’ll always send you off with post-care instructions)
When Will I See Results From Microneedling?

Most patients will see immediate results that continuously improve for up to several months after the treatment. This is because during that time, the body is producing more and more collagen, which will bring firmness and smoothness back to your skin.
However, in order to achieve optimal results, ongoing treatments will likely be recommended—typically a series of three or more treatments, each scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart. You’ll also want to follow a consistent skincare routine that implements medical-grade skincare. (Ask your A360° aesthetician for a “SkinScription” during your next visit to create a medical-grade skincare regimen!)
