New to Lip Fillers? Here’s Everything You Wish You Knew

Alright, put down that plumping gloss and throw away those plumping devices. Lip fillers give you fuller, more even lips without the dangers that come with the alternatives. Plus, they last a whole lot longer too!

Dermal Fillers 101: How long do lip fillers last? →

Our team at AESTHETICS 360° want to help you achieve the pout you’ve always wanted. For years, we’ve provided the best lip fillers in Milwaukee (totally not tooting our own horn), but our clients don’t come back time and time again for nothing!

If you’re thinking about getting lip fillers for yourself, keep reading and we’ll give you everything you need to know to prepare.

What are lip fillers made from?

Lip fillers are typically made from hyaluronic acid (HA). By the way, even if you haven’t heard of it, you may have skincare products with HA in your bathroom. That’s because hyaluronic acid is an amazing substance with to-die-for water-retaining capabilities.

Okay, so what exactly is HA?

HA is a naturally occurring sugar that’s found in your skin, allowing your tissues to retain water to stay plump, full, and firm. Fun fact: HA can hold 1000x its weight in water!

Many of us are born with thinner lips and have always wanted a fuller look. Other factors such as aging will contribute to the appearance of your lips. Like a lot of things, the amount of HA in your body decreases as you age. Combine that with a decrease in collagen and elastin, and you’ve got looser skin, flatter cheeks, and yes, even thinner lips. That’s a big reason why people often get dermal fillers in other areas on the face to fill in wrinkles, restore facial contours, and rejuvenate their youthful fullness.

Unlike creams or serums with HA, lip fillers are made with a gel form of hyaluronic acid. The gel allows the HA to stay in place so it doesn’t spread to other areas of your face (just imagine how that would look!). The HA gel pulls in water into the lip tissue which causes it to expand for amazing soft and full lips.

Hyaluronic acid = your ultimate collagen boost

You probably already know that your skin flourishes on collagen, but did you know that the same goes with your lips? Without enough collagen, your lips may start to deflate and become less supple.

Let’s explain why collagen really matters if you want the best pout possible.

Collagen, along with elastin, are fibers that lie in your dermis (bottom layer of skin, including your lips). Collagen fibers create a framework for your lips so they stay tight, full (for your natural lip size), and structured.

That all sounds great, right? Well, here’s the catch.

Over time, collagen breaks down, and your body decreases the production of those fibers. The main culprit behind the destruction is, you guessed it, the sun.

Harmful UVA and UVB rays penetrate the skin with ionizing radiation, which can do some major damage to the skin on your lips. While you may not notice the effects of too much fun in the sun when you’re younger, by the time you hit your mid 20s and 30s, that damage may become a little clearer. As the years pass, the lack of collagen and elastin lead to volume loss. Before you know it, you may wake up one day and not only feel older, but look older too. That’s why it’s important to find a lip balm that comes with SPF; you want to protect your lips just as much as you protect the rest of your skin!

Here are just a few things that happen as your lips age:

  • Upper lip loses its volume and inverts
  • Lower lip becomes thinner and goes inward
  • Cupid’s bow become less defined
  • Lips lose moisture and become more dry

However, even if you’re in your 20s and 30s, you can still benefit from an extra boost of collagen in your lips to help you look younger for longer.

Questions to ask before getting lip fillers in Milwaukee

A big thing we like to emphasize is to always, always, always do your research. The obvious reason? Well, we’re talking about your lips here, and it’s not like you can hide them if you end up getting a botched service. At some point we won’t be wearing masks all day!

To get the results you’re after, it’s incredibly important to ask questions before you book an appointment for lip fillers.

What kind of lip fillers does a med spa offer?

At AESTHETICS 360° we use both Juvéderm and Restylane products, which are hyaluronic acid-based injectable fillers that instantly erase wrinkles and enhance your lips, cheeks, and other natural features.

Specifically, Restylane KYSSE, an injectable filler for the lip and surrounding area, provides amazing improvement in the lip contour by boosting volume, smoothing vertical creases (smoker’s lines), and achieving symmetry. KYSSE is a wonderful filler for creating natural-looking lip volume while avoiding an overfilled or “swollen” look. The result will be pillowy-soft, hydrated lips.

What experience does the med spa have?

For the best results, go somewhere with trained medical professionals who know exactly what to do to enhance your natural beauty. Read reviews, ask your friends where they’ve had a great experience, call the practice and get a “feel” for who they are by asking some questions on the phone. Look at their before / after photos. Follow them on social media to see what they’re all about.

Humble brag moment: We choose experienced professionals at AESTHETICS 360°. We’re partnered with some of the best cosmetic surgeons in the area, ensuring that you’ll always get treatments you’ll be proud to show off.

Does the facility offer consultations?

We definitely don’t recommend booking an appointment with a facility that won’t meet with you to discuss your needs first. There’s no way to create a proper injection plan without first assessing your current lip state, having an in-depth conversation about your goals and providing complete education as to the process, what to expect, possible complications.

Do lip fillers hurt?

For most, lip fillers don’t hurt. However, lip fillers are injections, so you may experience some discomfort from the needle. However, for most people, the discomfort isn’t something unbearable, and it goes away shortly after the procedure is finished.  Topical numbing cream can be applied prior to treatment, for added comfort…and there is also lidocaine in the product itself.

How long do lip fillers last?

Lip fillers last 6-12 months on average. Keep in mind that this number will vary from person to person. The great thing about lip fillers is that even when they dissolve, hyaluronic acid continues to promote collagen growth to keep your lips soft and supple.

What kind of results can I expect from lip fillers?

You can expect whatever results you’d like! Whether you want to sharpen up your lip border with a natural appearance, even out asymmetrical lips or completely pump up the volume, lip fillers can get you there.

We can work with you to help you get the look you want, from natural to dramatic and anywhere in between. Right after your treatment, you will notice that your lips look fuller than you may want. That is due to swelling, and as time passes the HA gel will settle and the swelling will go down. Your true results will appear and continue to take shape the following weeks after your lip filler injections.  We always schedule a 2 week follow up appointment to take “after” photos and assess results for the perfect pout!

What to expect when you come to AESTHETICS 360° for lip fillers

Before you do anything, you’ll want to schedule a consultation so we can understand the desired look you’re going for. If we know in advance that you want to do treatment immediately after consultation, then we can schedule enough time to do that in the same visit.

To get started, a series of “before” photos will be taken.  Your face will be cleansed and prepped using aseptic technique.  You’ll rinse with an anti-bacterial mouth rinse to keep harmful bacteria at bay.  Topical numbing cream may be applied for comfort, as well as ice.  The injections may feel like a quick prick upon needle entry and then the HA gel filler containing lidocaine for comfort is dispensed.  This process is where the art of injecting meets science.  You will not be rushed and it is a methodical and deliberate process to achieve best results. During your appointment, we’ll do everything we can to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible.

An hour is typically scheduled for lip filler treatment. The area will be cleaned after treatment and an immediate “after” photo is taken so we have a record of how you looked right after we finished.  You will be sent home with sterile gauze wrapped around a small ice pack to apply on and off during the rest of the day.  Even though bruising may not be apparent at the time of treatment, it can sometimes appear later.  Lips may feel tender and swollen and should not be touched or massaged.  You will receive full post-treatment care instructions to know what to expect within the next days and weeks.
