Step 1: Cleanse
Whether it’s AM or PM, cleansing is the first step of any skin care routine…even if that’s where you decide to end your routine (but we hope not). Some people prefer a foaming cleanser, while others like a gel or a lotion type cleanser…no matter your preference, be sure you are fully cleansing away all makeup and whatever the day has brought on. AM cleansing is important to wash off oils and bacteria that may have accumulated overnight from sleeping and whatever your pillowcase holds. There are varying types of facial cleansers available for:
- Sensitive skin
- Oily/acne-prone skin
- Dry skin
- And more
Step 2: Tone
Toning your face helps rebalance your skin after washing, adds an additional protective layer and prepares your skin for the next steps. Some people think toner isn’t that big of a deal, but adding this step could really boost the look and feel of your face. If you have dry skin, be sure to avoid any toners that contain alcohol or other drying ingredients.
Step 3: Exfoliate
When you exfoliate your skin, you promote cellular turnover. Dead skin cells accumulate and sit at the surface, which can lead to dull skin and clogged pores. By using a gentle exfoliator, you get rid of built-up cells to help maintain your skin’s smoothness and clarity. However, not all exfoliants are created equal. Be careful with harsh scrubs with large beads that will damage your skin. If you want to avoid scrubs all together, chemical exfoliants work great!
Note: You do not need to exfoliate every day. One to two days a week is typically enough for most people. Over-exfoliation will lead to skin problems.
Step 4: Apply Serums
Serums are a great way to drive additional moisture, nutrients and other valuable ingredients into the skin through a more concentrated formula. During the day, you could opt for Vitamin C and Antioxidant serums to help brighten the skin and/or a hyaluronic acid serum to fight dryness. At night, skin resurfacing serums (like those made with glycolic acid) are great to clear away the day and prepare you for tomorrow.
Step 5: Hydrate and Protect
Finally, it’s time to moisturize your skin. Your moisturizer may change depending on the time of year. For instance, your skin may need extra hydration during the winter and less during the summer. Some people also prefer heavier moisturizers as part of their nighttime pre-wedding skincare routine.
In addition, SPF is a crucial part of any skincare routine. Some moisturizers already come with SPF, though they may not be as effective. For the best outcomes, buy a separate sun protection skincare product to help combat damaging free radicals.
